Glidecam through the streets on a Tokyo Cruise

We declare an end to the stagnant days of tripod-mounted cameras! Here is a mobile tour of Tokyo's hotspots using Glidecam technology

Judging by the short sleeves and sweat stains, this video was made in summer. (Video by YouTube user egawauemon.)

Once only the domain of the Hollywood cameraman, the seamless tracking shot where the camera remains steady and true while it captures the hustle and flow of everyday life can now be yours. Here's the Glidecam, a handy little attachment that allows videographers to smoothly track through a space without the camera bouncing up and down. The effect for the viewer is like being a whispy ghost secretly floating through the streets.

YouTube user egawauemon used the Glidecam HD-2000 in combination with a Canon 5D2 and EF24mm-F2.8 lens to capture summer in Tokyo. In the ten minute video, we move through Tsukiji Fish Market, Shibuya's Hachiko area, Spain-zaka and Center-gai, Shinjuku's Kabukicho and San-chome area, as well as the shopping area of Ginza.

Although egawauemon offers glimpses of each neighborhood during morning, afternoon, evening and night, Tokyo looks strangely empty most of the time. Only the night shots reflect the usually cramped atmosphere. Perhaps on the day of filming locals decided to forego spending time in the muggy summer air.

For those who want to put the Tokyo landscape into a national perspective, Egawauemon also turned his Glidecam-powered camera on other cities, including Kyoto, Osaka and Fukuoka.
